Sean O'Brien was appointed to the Marine City Commission in November, 2023. Sean graduated Marine City High School in 2007, having been a proud member of Mariner Drama during that time. He completed his BA in History at Northern Michigan University in 2012 and returned to the area afterward. He moved back into Marine City proper in 2015. He's been with his partner, Genevieve Prange, since high school.
Sean is currently completing his Ph. D. in labor history at Wayne State University, where he teaches a variety of history courses. He serves in a variety of labor organizing and activist roles on campus and nationally. He has led contract negotiations and managed treasuries. Working with labor groups in Detroit as well as teaching in the classroom provides Sean with daily experience with the great diversity of Michigan.
Sean particularly appreciates Marine City, having grown up in this community. His study of history provides a rich love for the history of the community, the historical sites within and the ties to the larger area. Sean and Genevieve's rather large family connections keep him anchored in the community and forward thinking for what the Marine City of tomorrow will look like.
In his free time, Sean can be found reading, writing, painting, or training in Japanese martial arts.
